A Visitor's Guide to Tunisia's New National Park Regulations

A Visitor's Guide to Tunisia's New National Park Regulations

In an effort to preserve its unique and fragile ecosystems, the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fishing has implemented new, mandatory procedures for visiting all national parks. These stricter controls, updated in October 2025, were introduced following serious incidents of environmental damage, including the illegal hunting of highly protected and endangered species.

This guide outlines the official rules and provides tips on how to be a respectful and responsible visitor, ensuring these natural treasures remain pristine for future generations.

The Mandatory Regulations (What You Must Do)

Compliance with these rules is not optional. Failure to follow them can result in legal prosecution, significant fines, and a ban from all protected areas in Tunisia.

1. Prior Authorization is Required for Everyone

All visitors, regardless of nationality, must now obtain prior approval.

  • How to Apply: You must submit a request via email to the Regional Agricultural Development Commission (CRDA) for the governorate where the national park is located. (See the list below)
  • Lead Time: The application must be sent at least 7 days before your planned visit.

2. Rules for Groups

  • Groups of 5 or More: Any group exceeding four people must be organized by a licensed travel agency, a legal organization, or an association. The application must clearly list the group leader and the full identities of all participants.
  • Exemptions: Official visits and family groups are exempt from the requirement to use a licensed operator but are not exempt from requiring prior authorization.

3. After You Receive Your Permit

The group leader (or the individual permit holder) is responsible for notifying the local and regional authorities of the final visit date and the confirmed participant list.

4. Strict On-Site Rules

Once inside the park, you must adhere to the following:

  • No Camping or Fires: Overnight camping and lighting fires of any kind are strictly forbidden. Consider instead using the official, designated camping and vacation centers that are often located near the park areas.
  • Minimize Noise: Excessive noise is prohibited. Do not bring musical instruments, speakers, or any form of sound amplifiers.
  • Leave No Trace: You must preserve the cleanliness of the area. Take all your waste with you when you leave.
  • Stay on Designated Paths: You must follow the instructions of the park rangers at all times and remain only in the areas where public access is permitted.

5. Fees and Penalties

  • The administration reserves the right to refuse applications based on the park's carrying capacity.
  • Entry fees may be instituted and are payable as required.
  • Violating these rules will lead to legal prosecution and a potential ban from visiting all protected areas in Tunisia in the future.

Beyond the Rules - How to Be a Respectful Visitor

Here’s how you can go beyond the rules and make a positive impact.

  • Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance. Never feed, chase, or attempt to touch them. Feeding wildlife disrupts their natural diet and can make them dependent on humans.
  • Leave What You Find: Allow others to enjoy the same beauty. Do not pick plants, remove rocks, or collect any natural objects. Take pictures, leave only footprints.
  • Be Mindful of Your Footprint: Stick to established trails. Walking off-path can damage fragile plant life and contribute to soil erosion.
  • Plan Ahead and Prepare: Research the park you are visiting. Understand the weather conditions, terrain, and specific hazards. This ensures your safety and minimizes your impact.
  • Support Conservation: If entry fees are required, view them as a direct contribution to the maintenance and protection of the park you are enjoying.
  • Spread the Word: Share these guidelines with your fellow travelers. A collective effort is the key to successful preservation.

By following both the letter and the spirit of these guidelines, you are not just a tourist—you are a steward of Tunisia's incredible natural heritage. Thank you for doing your part.

Happy and responsible exploring!
